Sea star - Luidia maculata

Occurs on soft bottoms, exposed or buried in the sand at depths of 0 to 90 m. Also found on seagrass. Carnivorous and feeds on other echinoderms and molluscs. Members of the class Asteroidea exhibit both asexual (regeneration and clonal) and sexual (gonochoric) means of reproduction. Life cycle: Embryos hatch into planktonic larvae and later metamorphose into pentamorous juveniles which develop into young sea stars with stubby arms.
