Black-Blotched Porcupinefish - Diodon liturosus - Hiding

Also known as Burrfishes, Balloonfishes, Globefishes, Hedgehog Fishes, Swelltoads, Blotched Porcupinefish, Shortspine Porcupinefish, Shortspine Porcupine and Masked Porcupinefish. Found singly in shallow waters of coral and rocky reefs hiding in caves, holes in the reef and under jetties. They feed nocturnally on hard shelled invertebrates. Maximum length 50 centimetres. Found in depths from 0 down to 90 metres. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific.Porcupinefish spines lay flat, but when threatened they can inflate like a "football with spikes" so the spines are facing outwards to deter prey. The have a plated mouth structure for crushing shells or "fingers".Can give a nasty bite!
