Underwater Photography with Camera Housings – Our Experience with Ikelite
Why all our underwater cameras require housings, and why we trust Ikelite
When reviewing cameras for underwater photography, it’s important to highlight that none of these cameras are waterproof on their own. Every model we’ve used and written about needed to be placed inside an appropriate underwater housing to function safely beneath the surface.
For our dives, we exclusively use Ikelite housings, which have proven to be durable, reliable, and diver-friendly. Their sturdy polycarbonate design, large buttons, and clear build make them perfect for operating even with gloves underwater. The housings also give us confidence down to depth ratings that match serious diving conditions.
Short review of Ikelite housings:
Ikelite has established itself as one of the most trusted housing manufacturers in underwater photography. We appreciate the precision of the controls, the ergonomic build, and the fact that they are made for a wide range of camera models. Our experience has shown them to be leak-resistant, easy to maintain, and compatible with accessories such as strobes and ports.
While some cameras like the OM System Tough TG-7 are waterproof up to 15 m, making them suitable for snorkeling and shallow dives, and classic film cameras like the Nikonos were built for depths of up to 40 m, most compact and DSLR cameras are not designed to go underwater on their own.
For us, using Ikelite housings with our cameras provides the safety, flexibility, and performance needed for deeper dives and consistent results in underwater photography.
