Zakopane
Zakopane is a resort town in southern Poland just a few
miles from the Slovak border at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. As early as at the end of the 18th
century the town started to attract the first summer holidaymakers. The railway
connecting Zakopane with Cracow in 1898, the construction of a cableway up to
Kasprowy Wierch by 1936 and by 1938 a chair rail which took tourists up to
Gubalowka secured the towns status as Poland’s winter capital. In our days Zakopane is busy
all year round, in winter with skiers and in summer with hikers.
