This photograph captures a series of rock-cut caves and cavities beneath a weathered limestone escarpment at Binġemma Gap, near the historic Dwejra Lines in Malta. Several dark openings are visible along the base of the overhanging rock face, while smaller cavities appear lower down the rugged hillside. The limestone displays irregular layers, natural erosion and exposed surfaces in pale cream, grey and warm ochre tones. Large stone blocks and rocky outcrops are scattered across the foreground, surrounded by dense Mediterranean shrubs, grasses and small yellow wildflowers. The caves form part of a landscape known for its archaeological remains and historical significance. The natural limestone ridge provided a strategic defensive position, while the gaps and valleys passing through it were important routes across the island.
