New Addition: L-Għar u Casa, Mellieħa – A Glimpse into Malta’s Troglodyte Past

We are excited to announce the latest addition to our Abandoned Places section: L-Għar u Casa, a fascinating cave dwelling nestled in the cliffs of Mellieħa.

The name "L-Għar u Casa" combines the Maltese word for "cave" (Għar) and the Italian word for "house" (Casa), reflecting its unique structure that merges natural caves with man-made extensions. Historically, such dwellings were common in Malta, with inhabitants adapting caves into homes. Notably, some of these cave homes in Mellieħa were inhabited until the 19th century, when British colonial authorities encouraged residents to relocate to nearby villages.

Today, L-Għar u Casa stands as a testament to this bygone era. Visitors can explore a series of interconnected caves and rooms carved into the rock face, offering insights into the resourcefulness of past communities. The site also provides panoramic views of Mellieħa Bay, making it a picturesque spot for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Please note that while the site is accessible, it is essential to exercise caution during your visit, as the terrain can be uneven and some areas may be unstable.

Discover more about L-Għar u Casa and other intriguing sites in our Abandoned Places section.
