Wat Maha That

Wat Maha That – Monastery of the Great Relic

Wat Maha That, located on Ayutthaya’s city island in the Tha Wasukri sub-district, is one of the most significant temples of the ancient capital. The monastery, once surrounded by canals and moats, was built on the west bank of the important Khlong Pratu Khao Pluak canal. Today, its ruins reveal Ayutthaya’s spiritual and architectural legacy.

Registered as a national historic site in 1935 and now part of the Ayutthaya Historical Park, Wat Maha That is most famous for the Buddha head entwined within tree roots — a striking and symbolic subject for photography.
