Greater Amberjack - Seriola dumerili - Trio in Open Blue Water

Amberjack - Image

Three Greater Amberjacks cruise together through open blue water, displaying their streamlined bodies and strongly forked tails.

The Greater Amberjack (Seriola dumerili) has a powerful, streamlined body that is moderately compressed from side to side, with a well-developed head and a deeply forked caudal fin carried on a narrow tail base. Its colour is generally bluish-grey or olive above and silvery-white below, often with a yellowish or amber stripe running along the side and a darker marking around the eye. A strong, fast-swimming predator, it inhabits open water and areas around offshore reefs, rocky structures and steep coastal drop-offs. Greater Amberjacks feed mainly on fish as well as squid and crustaceans and may occur alone or in small groups. The species is widespread in the Mediterranean and other warm temperate and tropical seas and can reach about 190 centimetres in total length, although around one metre is more typical.
