Greater Amberjack - Seriola dumerili - Rising through the Blue

Amberjack - Image

A solitary Greater Amberjack swims upward through open blue water as streams of diver bubbles rise around it.

The Greater Amberjack (Seriola dumerili) has a powerful, elongated and streamlined body that is moderately compressed from side to side, with a well-developed head, narrow caudal peduncle and deeply forked tail. Its colour is generally bluish-grey or olive above and silvery-white below, often with a faint amber stripe along the side and darker shading near the eye. A strong and fast-swimming predator, it inhabits open water as well as offshore reefs, rocky structures and steep coastal drop-offs. It feeds mainly on fishes, together with squid and crustaceans, and may occur alone or in small groups. Greater Amberjack is widespread in the Mediterranean and other warm temperate and tropical seas, usually occurring around 18–72 metres depth, and can reach about 190 centimetres in total length.
