Barracuda - Sphyraena sp. - Shimmering School beneath the Surface

A large school of slender Barracuda gathers in the sunlit shallows above Cirkewwa Reef in Malta, creating a shimmering mass just beneath the surface.

Barracudas of the genus Sphyraena have long, streamlined and laterally compressed bodies with pointed snouts, elongated jaws and prominent lower jaws armed with sharp teeth. Their two dorsal fins are widely separated and their deeply forked tails provide powerful propulsion for rapid swimming and sudden bursts of acceleration. Several species occur in the Mediterranean, including the Yellowmouth Barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis) and European Barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena), while historical records have also reported Yellowstripe Barracuda (Sphyraena chrysotaenia) from Maltese waters. Exact identification of the individuals in this photograph is difficult because the fish are distant and their diagnostic markings are not clearly visible. Their slender form, dense schooling behaviour and position immediately below the surface create an impressive underwater spectacle.
