The summit of the Zugspitze rises dramatically above the snow-covered slopes of the Zugspitzplatt in the Bavarian Alps, Germany. In this photograph, rugged limestone rock breaks through the snow while the summit buildings, cable-car installations and observation facilities occupy the narrow crest high above. The Zugspitze reaches 2,962 metres and is the highest mountain in Germany. Below the summit, the Zugspitzplatt lies at around 2,600 metres and forms an important high-altitude area for skiing, glacier excursions and access to the peak. Visitors can travel from the plateau to the summit using the Gletscherbahn, which covers the final section in only a few minutes. The steep contrast between exposed rock, lingering snow and the engineering structures at nearly 3,000 metres highlights both the harsh Alpine environment and the remarkable accessibility of Germany’s highest summit.
