Fort Campbell - Selmun, Malta - Abandoned Barracks Outside the Fort Perimeter

Fort Campbell - Image

Abandoned limestone barracks near Fort Campbell in Selmun, Malta, showing a long row of empty doorways and windows surrounded by wild vegetation outside the main defensive perimeter.

This photograph shows a group of abandoned military buildings situated outside the main defensive perimeter of Fort Campbell on the Selmun peninsula in northern Malta. The long limestone structure extends diagonally across the image, with a series of rectangular doorways and window openings revealing the remains of what are believed to have been former military barracks or accommodation facilities. The buildings feature flat roofs, substantial stone walls and a slightly elevated section towards the rear. Small ventilation openings are visible near the upper and lower sections of the walls, while the missing doors and windows expose the dark interiors. In the foreground, dense green vegetation, wildflowers and tall grasses have spread across the former military grounds. The pale limestone buildings stand beneath a clear blue Mediterranean sky, their simple functional architecture contrasting with the surrounding natural landscape.

Fort Campbell was constructed by the British between 1937 and 1938 as part of Malta’s coastal defence system shortly before the Second World War. Situated on the Selmun peninsula overlooking St Paul’s Bay, the fort was equipped with three 6-inch coastal artillery guns intended to protect the northern maritime approaches to Malta. Unlike the imposing bastioned fortifications of earlier centuries, Fort Campbell was designed with dispersed buildings, relatively low walls and an irregular perimeter intended to blend into the surrounding countryside and reduce visibility from aerial reconnaissance. The military installation required a range of supporting facilities in addition to its gun emplacements, observation posts and defensive structures. Accommodation buildings provided essential living space for the soldiers and artillery personnel responsible for operating and maintaining the coastal battery. The structures visible in this photograph are consistent with such a purpose, although their exact original function has not been conclusively established. Their position outside the main defensive perimeter suggests that they may have formed part of the wider military support complex associated with the fort. Following the end of Fort Campbell’s military service, many buildings were abandoned and gradually deteriorated through weathering, damage and the removal of reusable materials. Vegetation has since spread across the former military grounds, partially concealing the original layout of the complex. The surviving limestone buildings provide an interesting reminder of the everyday infrastructure required to support a British coastal artillery installation. This photograph documents another section of Fort Campbell’s military heritage, illustrating the remains of its possible accommodation facilities and their gradual reclamation by nature.
