A quieter view of New Schleißheim Palace in Oberschleissheim, with a gravel path leading toward a side section of the Baroque building framed by mature trees and dense greenery.

New Schleißheim Palace in Oberschleissheim, Bavaria, forms the monumental centrepiece of the historic Schleißheim Palace complex and is one of the outstanding Baroque residences associated with the Wittelsbach dynasty. This photograph reveals a quieter side of the palace grounds, with a gravel path disappearing between dense trees and shrubs before reaching a side section of the elegant cream-coloured palace, its tall symmetrical windows and decorative façade partially framed by foliage. Elector Max Emanuel commissioned the New Palace as part of an ambitious plan for a monumental residence. Construction began between 1701 and 1704 according to designs by Henrico Zuccalli but was interrupted during the War of the Spanish Succession. Following Max Emanuel’s return to Bavaria, work resumed, and from 1719 Joseph Effner continued the project, creating the façade and interiors in the French late-Baroque style. Only the main wing of the originally planned four-wing palace was ultimately completed. Together with the extensive historic court garden, the New Palace remains one of the most important Baroque ensembles in Bavaria.
