Oberschleissheim - New Schleißheim Palace - A Purple Path to Baroque Grandeur

A long border of purple flowers leads the eye toward the symmetrical façade of New Schleißheim Palace in the historic Baroque court garden at Oberschleissheim, Bavaria.

New Schleißheim Palace in Oberschleissheim, Bavaria, is the monumental centrepiece of the Schleißheim Palace complex and one of the most impressive Baroque residences of the Wittelsbach dynasty. In this photograph, a striking ribbon of purple flowers runs through the formal court garden and creates a strong visual line toward the central section of the palace façade. Elector Max Emanuel commissioned the New Palace as part of an ambitious residential project, with construction beginning between 1701 and 1704 according to plans by Henrico Zuccalli. Work was interrupted during the War of the Spanish Succession and resumed after Max Emanuel returned to Bavaria, with Joseph Effner taking charge from 1719 and introducing important elements of French late-Baroque design. Although the original plan envisaged a monumental four-wing complex, only the main palace wing was completed. The surrounding Schleißheim Court Garden is itself of major historical importance, preserving much of its Baroque structure with formal parterres, canals, axial perspectives and carefully arranged ornamental planting.
