An ornate historic palace dominates a street corner near Piazza Stesicoro, capturing the elegant architecture and lively character of central Catania.
An ornate historic palace rises above a busy street corner near Piazza Stesicoro in the center of Catania, its richly decorated façade glowing in the Sicilian sunlight. Cars, scooters and pedestrians bring everyday city life to a scene framed by the elegant architecture that characterizes the streets surrounding Via Etnea. Piazza Stesicoro lies along Via Etnea, the principal historic axis running through the heart of Catania from Piazza del Duomo toward the northern districts of the city. The surrounding area brings together several periods of Catania's architectural history, including elaborate Baroque and later 19th- and early-20th-century buildings. Via Etnea itself was laid out as part of the city's reconstruction following the devastating earthquake of 1693 and developed into one of Catania's most important commercial and ceremonial streets. Buildings constructed from pale stone frequently contrast with dark local lava stone, reflecting Catania's close relationship with nearby Mount Etna and giving the historic center its distinctive architectural character.
