Formal hedges, mature trees and a fountain spread across Villa Bellini, offering a peaceful green panorama in the heart of Catania.
Villa Bellini unfolds across landscaped slopes in the heart of Catania, with formal hedges, mature trees, flower beds and a fountain creating a peaceful green retreat above the surrounding city streets. This elevated view reveals the carefully arranged paths and terraces that give the historic garden its distinctive character. Also known as Giardino Bellini and affectionately called “'a Villa” by local residents, it is the oldest of Catania's principal public gardens. Its origins lie in an 18th-century private garden belonging to Prince Ignazio Paternò Castello di Biscari, originally designed with labyrinthine hedges, statues and ornamental fountains. The Municipality of Catania acquired the garden in 1854 and gradually enlarged and transformed it into a public park. Engineer Filadelfo Fichera played an important role in unifying the different areas with avenues, stairways and small bridges, creating much of the layout recognizable today. Dedicated to Catania-born composer Vincenzo Bellini, the renewed garden was officially inaugurated on 6 January 1883 and soon became a favourite meeting and leisure place for the city's residents.
