A grand historic palazzo in central Catania is perfectly framed by a large stone arch within Villa Bellini, creating a striking connection between the garden and the surrounding city. Clipped greenery fills the foreground while the building's elegant arched windows, decorative stonework and balconies appear beyond the shaded opening. Also known as Giardino Bellini and locally as “'a Villa,” Villa Bellini is the oldest of Catania's principal public gardens and occupies approximately 72,000 square metres in the historic city centre. Its origins can be traced to an 18th-century private garden belonging to Prince Ignazio Paternò Castello di Biscari, where labyrinthine hedges, statues and ornamental fountains created an elaborate retreat. The Municipality of Catania purchased the original garden in 1854 and subsequently enlarged it with neighbouring land. Its varied levels were connected by avenues, stairways and small bridges as the private grounds were transformed into a public park. Dedicated to the Catania-born composer Vincenzo Bellini, the completed garden was officially inaugurated on 6 January 1883 and remains one of the city's most popular green spaces.
