A panoramic view of Noto's residential outskirts, with hillside buildings, lush Mediterranean vegetation and a dramatic cloudy sky.
This photograph captures a quieter side of Noto in southeastern Sicily, looking across a green hillside towards residential buildings extending along the surrounding slopes. Dense trees, shrubs and Mediterranean vegetation dominate the foreground, while a mixture of traditional houses and more modern buildings occupies the middle distance. A construction crane rises above the rooftops on the right, providing a glimpse of the town's continuing development. Overhead, large grey and white clouds create a dramatic sky, with patches of sunlight illuminating parts of the landscape. Noto is internationally celebrated for its magnificent late Baroque architecture, developed during the reconstruction that followed the devastating earthquake of 1693. However, beyond its famous historic centre, the town is surrounded by an extensive landscape of rolling hills, agricultural land and Mediterranean vegetation. The wider Noto region is traditionally associated with olive groves, almond trees, vineyards and citrus cultivation. This photograph offers a different perspective on the Sicilian town, highlighting the relationship between its residential neighbourhoods and the surrounding countryside.
