Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch im Allgäu occupies a striking elevated position above the surrounding countryside, with its gardens and terraces offering far-reaching views toward the Alps. This photograph captures a quiet gravel path running alongside the palace building, where the tall historic façade on the right and a large leafless tree on the left frame the landscape beyond. Schloss Zeil stands at about 752 metres above sea level on a glacial terminal moraine, a location that gives the estate much of its commanding character. The present Renaissance residence was built under Froben von Waldburg-Zeil at the beginning of the seventeenth century, replacing an earlier medieval castle on the Zeil hill. The gardens and viewing terraces remain an important part of the estate, combining historic architecture with one of the most impressive long-distance panoramas in the western Allgäu.
