A peaceful view from the garden terrace of Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch im Allgäu, looking across the rolling countryside toward the distant snow-capped Alps.
The garden of Schloss Zeil near Leutkirch im Allgäu occupies an elevated position that opens onto sweeping views across the surrounding countryside toward the distant Alpine chain. In this photograph, a straight garden path framed by lawns, low hedges and two large ornamental urns leads the eye toward the edge of the terrace, where the landscape suddenly expands into forests, fields, settlements and snow-capped mountains on the horizon. Schloss Zeil stands approximately 752 metres above sea level on a glacial terminal moraine, a position that contributes greatly to the dramatic outlook from its gardens. The historic residence has been associated with the House of Waldburg for centuries, while the present Renaissance palace complex developed from the end of the sixteenth century onward. The garden and viewing terrace form an important part of the estate, combining formal landscape design with the naturally elevated setting. On clear days, the panoramic view toward the Alps is one of the defining experiences of Schloss Zeil and helps explain why the site has long been celebrated for its remarkable position above the Allgäu landscape.
