Ancient brick walls, arches and foundations survive within a quiet urban courtyard in Rome, surrounded by buildings from much later periods.
Ancient remains are scattered throughout Rome far beyond the boundaries of its famous archaeological parks, and many survive within courtyards, gardens and later urban buildings. In this photograph, weathered brick walls, vaulted openings and fragmented foundations form a dense archaeological layer within an enclosed city setting. Vegetation has taken hold between parts of the masonry, emphasizing the age and long exposure of the structures. Behind the ruins, later residential and historic buildings illustrate the way Rome has developed continuously around its ancient fabric rather than replacing it completely. Without a confirmed site identification, the remains are best described as historic Roman masonry rather than assigned to a specific monument. The scene nevertheless captures one of the most characteristic aspects of Rome: traces of the ancient city appearing unexpectedly within the modern urban landscape.
