A close view of the Basilica Ulpia reveals ancient columns, reconstructed bases and sections of patterned marble pavement within Trajan’s Forum in Rome.
The Basilica Ulpia was the monumental civic basilica of Trajan’s Forum and one of the largest public buildings constructed in ancient Rome. Built in the early 2nd century AD under Emperor Trajan, the basilica formed a major part of the forum complex traditionally associated with the architect Apollodorus of Damascus. In this photograph, surviving column shafts, reconstructed bases and sections of geometric marble paving provide a closer look at the architectural detail of the site. The mixture of grey, red and pale stone reflects the rich use of coloured marbles that once decorated the interior and surrounding spaces. Behind the reconstructed elements, ancient brick walls and further archaeological remains reveal the layered condition of the forum today. The scene offers an intimate view of the materials and craftsmanship that helped make Trajan’s Forum one of the grandest monumental complexes of imperial Rome.
