The ornate facade of Santa Caterina dei Funari rises above a busy central Rome street, where scooters and everyday traffic pass between historic buildings.
Santa Caterina dei Funari stands in the historic centre of Rome and is distinguished by its richly decorated late-Renaissance facade. The church was rebuilt in the 16th century, with Guidetto Guidetti, a pupil of Michelangelo, responsible for the project. Its two-storey facade is embellished with pilasters, niches, sculpted ornament and decorative festoons, while a triangular pediment crowns the composition. In this photograph, the church appears at the end of a narrow urban view framed by larger historic buildings, while scooters, cars and pedestrians fill the street below. The contrast between the elaborate architecture and the lively everyday traffic captures a characteristic side of modern Rome, where centuries-old churches and monuments remain closely woven into the daily life of the city.
