The grand neoclassical facade of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni dominates Via Nazionale, reflecting Rome’s late-19th-century transformation into a modern capital.
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni stands prominently on Via Nazionale in central Rome and is one of the city’s major historic exhibition buildings. Designed by architect Pio Piacentini, construction began in 1880 and the palace was formally inaugurated in 1883 as a venue dedicated to the Fine Arts. Its monumental facade, with broad steps, classical columns, sculptural decoration and a large central arch, was intended to express the cultural ambitions of Rome after it became the capital of unified Italy. In this photograph, the building occupies the full corner of the street while everyday city traffic passes in front, emphasizing the contrast between monumental architecture and modern urban life. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni remains an important cultural venue and continues to host exhibitions and artistic events in the heart of Rome.
