Santa Maria di Loreto stands beside Trajan’s Forum in the historic heart of Rome, its distinctive Renaissance church and elaborate dome framed here by two tall umbrella pines. Construction began in 1507 for the Roman Guild of Bakers, the Università dei Fornari, replacing a smaller chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. The project was entrusted to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and was completed around seventy years later by Giacomo Del Duca, a pupil of Michelangelo, who added the impressive dome and bell tower. Architecturally, the church combines a substantial square base of brick and travertine with a high octagonal drum supporting an unusually prominent dome. Its elaborate open lantern, traditionally nicknamed the “Cricket’s Cage”, creates the distinctive silhouette visible above the surrounding buildings. Standing close to Trajan’s Forum and the Imperial Fora, Santa Maria di Loreto provides a striking example of how Renaissance architecture became interwoven with the surviving monuments of ancient Rome.
