Via Nazionale stretches through central Rome toward Piazza della Repubblica, lined by monumental architecture and the everyday traffic of the Italian capital.
Via Nazionale stretches in a long, almost uninterrupted perspective through the center of Rome, with historic palaces lining both sides of the broad avenue. This view looks in the direction of Piazza della Repubblica, while the imposing walls and buildings of the Palazzo del Viminale complex occupy part of the right-hand side of the street. Developed principally during the late 19th century, Via Nazionale became an important element in the modernization of Rome following its designation as the capital of unified Italy in 1871. The avenue provided a major connection between the growing area around Termini railway station and the older historic center. Its architecture reflects this period of rapid urban transformation, with substantial government buildings, hotels, commercial premises and residential palaces creating a character quite different from Rome’s narrower medieval streets. The buses, pedestrians and road traffic in this photograph show Via Nazionale continuing its original role as one of central Rome’s important urban thoroughfares.
