The Dusky Grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) has a large, robust body with a well-developed head, powerful jaws and a rounded caudal fin. Its colour ranges from dark reddish-brown to greyish, marked with irregular pale, yellow-green or whitish blotches that provide effective camouflage against rocky surroundings. Adults are typically solitary and territorial, favouring rocky bottoms with caves, ledges and crevices where they can shelter and ambush prey. The species is widespread throughout the Mediterranean and can reach approximately 150 centimetres in total length, although most individuals encountered by divers are considerably smaller.
