A close-up of a probable Red Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) resting on the P29 wreck at Ċirkewwa, Malta, displaying its large eye, spiny head and intricate camouflage among marine growth.
This underwater photograph shows a scorpionfish, most likely a Red Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa), resting on a marine-encrusted section of the P29 patrol boat wreck at Ċirkewwa, Malta. The fish’s broad, heavily textured head dominates the image, revealing a prominent reddish eye, numerous fleshy appendages around the mouth and head, and an intricate pattern of reddish-brown, grey and greenish markings. Its spiny dorsal fin and irregular body outline help it blend into the surrounding marine growth, making the fish remarkably difficult to distinguish from its environment. The Red Scorpionfish is one of the larger Mediterranean members of the family Scorpaenidae and is typically associated with rocky seabeds, reefs and other sheltered underwater structures. It is an ambush predator, relying on camouflage and remaining motionless while waiting for smaller fish and crustaceans to approach. Like other scorpionfish, it possesses venomous fin spines that can cause painful injuries if handled. The P29 was a former Armed Forces of Malta patrol boat deliberately sunk off Ċirkewwa in 2007 to form an artificial reef and recreational dive site. Today its submerged surfaces support marine growth and provide habitat for a variety of Mediterranean fish, including well-camouflaged bottom-dwelling species such as scorpionfish.
