Scuba divers exploring the submerged superstructure of the P29 patrol boat wreck at Ċirkewwa, Malta, surrounded by small Mediterranean fish in the deep blue water.
This underwater photograph captures several scuba divers exploring the P29 patrol boat wreck off Ċirkewwa on Malta’s northern coast. The vessel’s heavily encrusted superstructure dominates the centre of the image, with the wheelhouse, surrounding railings and sections of the deck visible beneath a covering of marine growth. Divers swimming alongside and above the wreck provide a sense of its impressive size, while numerous small fish gather around the submerged structure. The surrounding water fades into deep shades of blue, creating an atmospheric underwater scene enhanced by the circular perspective of the wide-angle photograph. The P29 was originally a patrol boat operated by the Armed Forces of Malta before being decommissioned and deliberately scuttled off Ċirkewwa in 2007. The vessel was prepared as an artificial reef and recreational diving attraction, eventually settling upright on the seabed at a maximum depth of approximately 34 metres. Over time, marine organisms have colonized its exposed surfaces, attracting fish and other Mediterranean wildlife. Today the P29 is one of Malta’s established wreck-diving destinations, offering experienced divers the opportunity to explore a former military vessel while observing the marine ecosystem developing around its submerged structure.
