Three Brown Meagre (Sciaena umbra) swimming together above a rocky seabed at Ċirkewwa Marine Park, Malta, displaying their distinctive spotted bodies, yellowish fins and dark pelvic fins.
This underwater photograph captures three Brown Meagre (Sciaena umbra) swimming close together above the rocky seabed at Ċirkewwa Marine Park, on the northwestern coast of Malta. Two larger individuals dominate the centre of the image, while a smaller fish swims beneath them among scattered seagrass and limestone rocks. Their relatively deep, laterally compressed bodies display numerous fine dark spots, while the dorsal and tail fins show yellowish tones with darker margins. The distinctive dark pelvic fins, edged with pale markings, are particularly noticeable beneath the larger fish. The surrounding seabed consists of irregular limestone formations, patches of marine vegetation and small areas of sediment, creating a typical Mediterranean coastal habitat. The strong blue underwater lighting gives the scene a cool appearance while allowing the characteristic body shapes and fin patterns of the fish to remain visible.
The Brown Meagre belongs to the family Sciaenidae, a group commonly known as drums and croakers. It is a characteristic species of the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic, where it inhabits coastal waters associated with rocky reefs, caves, crevices and seagrass meadows. The species has a relatively deep body, a strongly curved back, a small downward-positioned mouth and a distinctive combination of dark pelvic and anal fins with pale leading edges. Its natural coloration varies from bronze and silvery brown to darker shades, often displaying metallic or golden reflections. Brown Meagre frequently occur individually or in small groups and tend to remain near rocky shelter during daylight hours, becoming more active in low light and at night. They feed mainly on small crustaceans, fishes and other marine invertebrates found close to the seabed. The species has been recorded at depths extending to approximately 200 metres, although encounters by recreational divers generally occur in much shallower coastal habitats. Brown Meagre can reach around 70 centimetres in length, but many individuals are considerably smaller. This photograph illustrates the species’ characteristic social behaviour and close association with rocky Mediterranean habitats, documenting three individuals moving together through the underwater landscape of Ċirkewwa Marine Park.
