Historic palazzi line busy Corso Umberto I through Modica Bassa, with the steep rocky hillside rising beyond the elegant façades.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Modica Bassa, framed on both sides by imposing historic palazzi whose richly detailed stone façades reflect the architectural heritage of southeastern Sicily. Beyond the busy street, the steep rocky hillside rises dramatically above the buildings, illustrating how closely Modica's historic neighborhoods are woven into the rugged landscape. Corso Umberto I forms the principal urban axis of the lower town and passes many of Modica's most important churches, noble residences and civic buildings. Much of the city's present architectural character developed following the catastrophic earthquake of 1693, when Modica and other towns of the Val di Noto were extensively rebuilt in the elaborate late-Baroque style that distinguishes southeastern Sicily. The lower town developed along the valley floor, while Modica Alta climbs the surrounding slopes in a maze of narrow lanes and stairways. This unusual topography, combined with monumental architecture and warm local stone, gives Modica its characteristic layered appearance and makes Corso Umberto I an excellent place to experience the everyday life and historic character of the city.
