Snow-covered volcanic ridges lead toward the upper slopes of Mount Etna, where dense clouds drift across the mountain and conceal much of the summit area. Dark lava fields weave between broad patches of winter snow, while a mountain road in the foreground emphasizes the immense scale of this rugged volcanic landscape. Mount Etna is a complex and exceptionally active stratovolcano whose slopes have been repeatedly reshaped by lava flows, eruptive fissures and the formation of numerous volcanic cones. Its appearance changes dramatically with elevation and season: during winter, snow blankets much of the higher terrain while exposed lava and scoria create striking black patterns across the white landscape. Passing clouds can rapidly obscure the upper mountain, leaving only brief views toward its summit. Etna's extraordinary geological features and exceptionally long record of observed volcanic activity led to its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. UNESCO recognizes the volcano as an outstanding example of continuing geological processes and one of the world's most active and iconic volcanoes.
