A gilded seated Buddha surrounded by smaller sacred images and colourful devotional offerings inside a pavilion at Pha That Luang in Vientiane.
This photograph looks into a richly arranged Buddhist shrine within the Pha That Luang complex in Vientiane, Laos. A gilded seated Buddha occupies the central position beneath the decorated pavilion roof, surrounded by smaller Buddha figures, religious objects and numerous colourful offerings presented by worshippers. The warm gold, red and green tones of the shrine contrast with the pale columns and sunlit entrance, creating an intimate view of the devotional life associated with this important sacred site. Pha That Luang, meaning the Great Sacred Stupa, is regarded as the most important national cultural monument in Laos and an enduring symbol of Lao Buddhism. The principal stupa was constructed in 1566 under King Setthathirath after Vientiane became the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom. It was built over an earlier religious structure and is traditionally believed to contain a relic of the Buddha. While the great golden stupa dominates the complex, smaller shrines such as this reveal how Pha That Luang continues to function as an active place of Buddhist devotion.
