Tall grasses and a traditional woven fence line the Mekong riverbank in Vientiane, overlooking shallow water and broad seasonal sandbanks.
This photograph captures a quiet stretch of the Mekong riverbank in Vientiane, Laos, where tall grasses and leafy trees grow beside a simple woven bamboo fence. Beyond the green foreground, a narrow channel of water winds past broad exposed sandbanks, illustrating the changing character of the river during periods of lower water. Vientiane developed on a curve of the Mekong, and the river remains one of the defining natural features of the Lao capital. Extending for approximately 4,350 kilometres through or along six countries, the Mekong is one of the great rivers of Southeast Asia. In Laos it has traditionally provided communities with food and water while also serving as an important transport and trading route. The river is equally significant to everyday social and cultural life, particularly in settlements established along its banks. Scenes such as this reveal a quieter side of Vientiane, where natural vegetation and the seasonally changing river landscape remain closely connected with the urban environment.
