The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mellieħa glows with colourful decorative lights during the village’s annual September festa.
This photograph captures the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Mellieħa illuminated at night during the village festa. Hundreds of colourful lights outline the church’s twin bell towers and architectural details, transforming the familiar limestone façade into a brilliant display of red, green, blue and golden light against the dark night sky. Religious statues positioned between the towers are also illuminated, adding to the festive appearance of the church. Mellieħa’s parish church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, locally associated with the devotion to Marija Bambina, whose feast is celebrated on 8 September. The date is also Victory Day in Malta and carries both religious and national significance. The annual Mellieħa Festa combines religious ceremonies and processions with traditional street decorations, music, fireworks and elaborate illuminations. Decorating parish churches with rows of coloured lights is one of the most distinctive visual traditions of the Maltese festa, creating a dramatic nighttime spectacle and bringing the historic church into the centre of the community’s celebrations.
