The imposing 19th-century portico of the Our Lady of Providence Chapel at Ħal Kbir, with the older 18th-century chapel rising behind it.
This photograph shows the Chapel of Our Lady of Divine Providence, commonly known as Madonna tal-Providenza, in the historic Ħal Kbir area on the outskirts of Siġġiewi, Malta. The view is dominated by the chapel’s imposing classical portico, with tall square pillars supporting broad arches and a central pediment, while the smaller 18th-century church and its bell structure rise behind it. The present chapel replaced an earlier place of worship associated with the former rural settlement of Ħal Kbir and was blessed in 1753. Over time it became particularly associated with devotion to Our Lady of Divine Providence. In 1815 the building suffered damage after being struck by lightning. During the subsequent repairs, the substantial portico visible in this photograph was constructed, providing additional support while giving the small countryside chapel its distinctive monumental appearance. The chapel remains an important part of Siġġiewi’s religious heritage and continues to be associated with the traditional feast of Our Lady of Providence celebrated by the local community.
