Our Lady of Providence Chapel - Siġġiewi, Malta - Rooftop Statues and Octagonal Lantern

Sculpted figures, an ornamental flame finial and the cross-topped lantern decorate the roofline of the historic Our Lady of Providence Chapel at Ħal Kbir.

This photograph focuses on the upper architectural details of the Chapel of Our Lady of Divine Providence, commonly known as Madonna tal-Providenza, at Ħal Kbir near Siġġiewi, Malta. Stone statues stand prominently along the roofline, accompanied by an elaborate flame-shaped finial, while the octagonal lantern of the chapel rises behind them and is crowned by a cross against the blue Maltese sky. These decorative features give the relatively small countryside chapel a particularly distinctive silhouette. The present chapel replaced an earlier place of worship associated with the former rural settlement of Ħal Kbir and was blessed in 1753. Its architecture was subsequently altered following structural damage in the early 19th century. After the building was struck by lightning in 1815, substantial repairs were undertaken and the imposing classical portico seen in other views of the chapel was added. The combination of its octagonal form, sculptural decoration and later monumental portico makes Madonna tal-Providenza an unusual and particularly interesting example of Malta’s historic rural religious architecture.
