The richly decorated barrel-vaulted interior of the Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar in Valletta, viewed along the nave towards the historic altar.
This photograph looks along the richly decorated interior of the Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar in Valletta, Malta. Rows of traditional wooden chairs lead towards the elevated altar, while elaborate painted wall panels and the magnificent barrel-vaulted ceiling create an intimate yet highly ornamental setting. Decorative ribs divide the vault into a series of bays embellished with heraldic and religious motifs. The chapel was commissioned during the rule of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena and completed in 1719 for the Knights of the Langue of Aragon. Its interior decoration reflects the continuing association of the chapel with the Order of St John, incorporating the coats of arms of de Vilhena and later Grand Masters Manuel Pinto da Fonseca and Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc. The altar occupies a separate chancel at the end of the nave, framed by architectural decoration that complements the painted vault above. Despite its relatively modest dimensions, the chapel possesses one of Valletta’s particularly distinctive historic religious interiors, combining Baroque decoration with the heraldic traditions of the Knights of St John.
