Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar - Valletta, Malta - Painted Vault and Heraldic Decoration

Painted cherubs, elaborate floral ornamentation and heraldic shields decorate the barrel-vaulted ceiling of the historic Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar in Valletta.

This photograph focuses on the richly decorated barrel-vaulted ceiling of the Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar in Valletta, Malta. Painted cherubs appear within an ornate central panel surrounded by scrolling foliage, architectural borders and prominent heraldic shields, while successive decorated ribs extend along the curved vault below. The intricate combination of colour, religious imagery and heraldry reflects the chapel’s close association with the Knights of the Order of St John. The Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar was completed in 1719 during the rule of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena and served the Knights of the Langue of Aragon. Its barrel-vaulted nave is divided into six bays, creating a framework for the elaborate painted decoration covering the ceiling. Heraldic elements incorporated into the vault commemorate de Vilhena and subsequent Grand Masters Manuel Pinto da Fonseca and Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, each of whom was associated with alterations or embellishments to the chapel. The ceiling consequently preserves both the religious character of the building and a visual record of its connections with the Order of St John.
