Immaculate Conception Chapel - L-Aħrax, Mellieħa - Simple Coastal Chapel Beneath the Open Sky

The secluded Immaculate Conception Chapel at L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, standing amid the rocky landscape near the end of the Marfa Ridge.

This photograph shows the small Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, near the end of the Marfa Ridge in northern Malta. Its simple symmetrical façade, central arched doorway and cross stand prominently against the open blue sky, while the surrounding rocky terrain emphasizes the isolated coastal character of the site. The present chapel was built in 1961 to replace an earlier chapel dating from the late 19th century. That building stood considerably closer to the cliff edge and eventually became threatened by instability and erosion of the fissured coastal rock, leading to the construction of a replacement farther inland. According to local tradition, the earlier chapel originated as a votive offering by a fisherman who was the sole survivor when a fishing boat capsized, and for many years the chapel also served as a recognizable landmark for fishermen at sea. A statue of Our Lady erected nearby in 1870 further reflects the long association of this remote coastal location with Marian devotion.
