St Joseph the Worker Church on Xemxija Heights, with its distinctive arched façade rising above the surrounding Mediterranean greenery.
This photograph shows the Church of St Joseph the Worker on Xemxija Heights in northern Malta, viewed from below through the surrounding Mediterranean trees. The elevated perspective emphasizes the church’s prominent hillside position, while its large recessed arch, warm-toned masonry and simple cross stand out clearly against the intense blue Maltese sky. The Franciscan Capuchins established a presence at Xemxija during the 1930s, initially using part of a residence as a small place of worship. As the local congregation increased, a much larger and distinctive round church dedicated to St Joseph the Worker was built in 1959. Problems caused by unstable ground eventually led to the demolition of that building in 1988. Construction of the present church began in September 1992, with the foundation stone laid on 21 February 1993. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on 25 June 1994. Its modern design and commanding position above Xemxija have since made the church a recognizable feature of the surrounding coastal landscape.
