The limestone façade of St Lawrence Parish Church in San Lawrenz, framed by twin bell towers and its distinctive red-and-white ribbed dome.
This photograph presents the imposing façade of St Lawrence Parish Church in the Gozitan village of San Lawrenz. The symmetrical limestone frontage is framed by two substantial bell towers, while the distinctive red-and-white ribbed dome rises prominently between them against the blue sky. Carved stone details, niches and the central entrance add further interest to the otherwise restrained village church façade. Before San Lawrenz developed as a separate community, the area was known as Ta’ Ċangura and formed part of the neighbouring parish of Għarb. As the settlement grew, its residents sought a larger church of their own. The foundation stone of the present church was laid and blessed by Bishop Pietro Pace on 21 November 1886, with a relic of St Lawrence placed beneath it. San Lawrenz was established as an independent parish on 15 March 1893, taking the name of its patron saint. The church was substantially enlarged during the 1950s and today forms the architectural and religious focal point of this small rural Gozitan village.
