The pipe organ and decorated organ loft inside St Paul’s Collegiate Basilica in Rabat, framed by paintings, gilded ornament and the richly decorated nave vault.
This photograph shows the pipe organ and organ loft inside St Paul’s Collegiate Basilica in Rabat, Malta. Tall silver-coloured organ pipes rise symmetrically above the curved gallery, while gilded relief decoration embellishes the panels and architectural framework below. Painted religious figures extending across the vault and surrounding surfaces integrate the organ into the richly decorated interior of the church. The combination of dark architectural tones, polished pipes and gold ornament creates an impressive focal point at the end of the nave. The present basilica was begun in 1653 according to plans prepared by Francesco Buonamici and completed by Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà in 1683. During subsequent generations its interior was progressively enriched with paintings, sculpture, gilding and liturgical furnishings, producing the elaborate Baroque character visible today. The basilica forms part of the historic religious complex associated with St Paul’s Grotto and remains one of the most important churches in Rabat. This close view highlights the craftsmanship of the organ loft and its integration with the surrounding painted and gilded decoration.
