This photograph shows the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mġarr, Malta, illuminated by warm afternoon sunlight. Its imposing Neoclassical façade features six monumental columns, a triangular pediment, statues set within niches and two symmetrical bell towers crowned by decorative cupolas. Behind the façade rises the church’s remarkable elliptical dome, while the Latin inscription AVE REGINA CÆLORUM, meaning Hail, Queen of Heaven, stretches across the upper entrance. Mġarr became an independent parish in 1898, and construction of the present church began in 1912 on the site of an earlier place of worship. The ambitious building project was largely supported by the local farming community, whose contributions included voluntary labour and the sale of agricultural produce. According to local records, approximately 360,000 eggs were donated towards construction, giving the church its popular association with eggs and its unusually shaped dome. Building work continued through several stages, with the final architectural elements completed in 1948. Today the church remains Mġarr’s most prominent landmark and a remarkable testament to the determination and generosity of its rural community.
