A seaward view of the former Fortina Hotel complex along the Tigné waterfront in Sliema, showing its extensive balconies, neighbouring high-rise buildings and modern waterfront structures.
This photograph presents a view of the former Fortina Hotel complex along the Tigné waterfront in Sliema, Malta, photographed from the waters of Marsamxett Harbour. The long hotel building dominates the centre of the image, with its extensive glass-fronted façade and numerous balconies arranged in regular horizontal rows. Behind it rises a taller, rounded building with curved balconies, while a striking white angular structure adds a modern architectural feature to the neighbouring waterfront development. The promenade and lower waterfront buildings stretch along the shoreline, contrasting with the deep blue Mediterranean waters in the foreground. Situated close to Tigné Point, the Fortina complex formed part of Sliema’s established tourism and hospitality landscape, occupying a prominent position overlooking Marsamxett Harbour and the approaches to Valletta. The surrounding district has experienced substantial redevelopment over the years, transforming this section of the coastline with new residential, commercial and hospitality buildings. This photograph provides an interesting record of an earlier stage in that transformation, capturing the distinctive hotel architecture and dense waterfront development that characterized the Tigné area. The view from the sea emphasizes the scale of the buildings and their relationship with Sliema’s urban coastline.
