A panoramic view of St Paul’s Islands from the coastline of St Paul’s Bay, Malta, showing the rocky islets, the distant statue of St Paul and the calm blue Mediterranean Sea.
This photograph presents a panoramic view of St Paul’s Islands, situated just off the northern coast of Malta near St Paul’s Bay. The low-lying limestone islets stretch across the horizon, surrounded by the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Their pale rocky cliffs and sparse vegetation contrast with the brilliant blue sky, while a small white statue dedicated to the Apostle Paul is visible on the higher ground. Rugged limestone rocks in the foreground frame the peaceful coastal scene, with a solitary rock emerging from the calm water closer to the shore. Known in Maltese as Il-Gżejjer ta’ San Pawl, the islands are traditionally associated with the shipwreck of the Apostle Paul around AD 60, an event described in the biblical Acts of the Apostles. According to Christian tradition, Paul and his companions reached Malta after their vessel was driven ashore during a violent storm. A statue commemorating the Apostle Paul was erected on the islands in 1845 and remains a recognizable landmark when viewed from the surrounding coastline. Although the exact location of the biblical shipwreck is debated, the islands continue to hold considerable religious and historical significance. Today they form a distinctive feature of the St Paul’s Bay landscape and an attractive subject for coastal photography.
