A small sea cave beneath weathered limestone cliffs along the coast of St Paul’s Bay, Malta, with sunlight sparkling on the turquoise Mediterranean water.
This photograph captures a small natural sea cave beneath the rugged limestone cliffs of St Paul’s Bay on Malta’s northern coast. The cave entrance appears as a dark recess at the base of a steep, weathered rock face, partly sheltered by an overhanging section of limestone. Clear Mediterranean water surrounds the formation, changing from deep blue and turquoise near the cliff to darker shades beneath the overhang. Bright sunlight sparkles across the sea on the left, while exposed coastal rocks in the foreground display patches of yellow-orange lichen and sparse Mediterranean vegetation. The coastline around St Paul’s Bay is characterized by limestone formations that have been gradually shaped by natural weathering, wave action and erosion. Over time, the sea can exploit fractures and weaker sections of rock, forming small caves, sheltered recesses and irregular cliff openings. These natural features contribute to the varied coastal scenery found throughout the Maltese Islands. Although the precise name of this particular cave has not been established, the photograph provides an attractive example of the interaction between Malta’s limestone geology and the Mediterranean Sea, highlighting the contrast between rugged coastal rock formations and clear blue water.
