This photograph captures part of the abandoned Riviera Martinique Hotel near Għajn Tuffieħa on Malta’s northwestern coast. The deteriorating limestone building dominates the image, with weathered stone walls, boarded and empty openings, exposed concrete floors and a partially open structure overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Cracks, discoloured masonry and missing architectural elements reveal the effects of prolonged neglect, while dense green shrubs and small yellow wildflowers have begun to reclaim the surrounding grounds. Through the open section on the left, the blue Mediterranean Sea remains visible, providing a striking contrast between the abandoned building and the natural beauty of its coastal setting. The former Riviera Martinique Hotel occupied a prominent location near one of Malta’s most scenic beach areas, overlooking the coastline around Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay. Historical accounts associate the property with the Fenech family from 1978 and indicate that the hotel ceased operating in 1988, although its earlier history is less clearly documented. Following its closure, the building became a familiar example of abandoned tourism infrastructure along Malta’s coastline. Its exposed location, deteriorating structure and encroaching vegetation created an atmospheric reminder of a former chapter in the island’s tourism history.
