This photograph shows the Chapel of Our Lady of Hodegetria, also known locally as Our Lady of Ħerba, situated at Binġemma Gap near the historic Dwejra Lines in Malta. The modest rural chapel has a symmetrical limestone façade, with a dark wooden entrance framed by a pale stone doorway and a small circular window positioned above it. At the top of the building, a simple bell-cot houses a single bell beneath a stone cross, while the gently sloping roofline is finished with red edging. Two decorative planters stand on either side of the entrance, adding a welcoming touch to the otherwise restrained architecture. The weathered limestone blocks contrast with the dramatic blue sky and scattered clouds above the building. The chapel occupies a historically significant location near Binġemma Gap, an important passage through the natural ridge that was later incorporated into Malta’s Victoria Lines defensive system. The site is also associated with an ancient rock-cut tomb, traditionally identified as Punic or Romano-Punic, situated beneath the chapel. This connection reflects the long history of human activity in the Binġemma area, where archaeological remains, rural religious buildings and nineteenth-century military fortifications exist within a relatively small landscape.
