Jerma Palace Hotel - Image

The abandoned Jerma Palace Hotel in Marsaskala, Malta, photographed from the sea, showing its deteriorating waterfront façade, open galleries and graffiti-covered walls.

This photograph captures the abandoned Jerma Palace Hotel in Marsaskala, Malta, as seen from the Mediterranean Sea. The once-impressive waterfront hotel stretches across the image, displaying its distinctive multi-storey architecture with rows of arched openings, balconies and open galleries. Sections of the building reveal exposed interior rooms and damaged structural elements, while colourful graffiti covers parts of the weathered façade. The pale limestone-coloured exterior contrasts with the deep blue Mediterranean water in the foreground. Along the rocky shoreline, scattered stones and a few beachgoers provide a sense of scale, emphasizing the enormous size of the former resort. The photograph illustrates the striking contrast between the hotel’s original purpose as a luxury holiday destination and the visible deterioration that followed its closure.

The Jerma Palace Hotel was once among Malta’s prominent seaside hotels, occupying a waterfront location on the St Thomas Bay side of Marsaskala. Opened in 1982, the hotel was developed during a period when Malta’s tourism industry was expanding and demand for large coastal resorts was increasing. Its distinctive architecture incorporated extensive balconies, terraces and arcaded galleries designed to take advantage of the surrounding Mediterranean scenery. The resort offered accommodation and leisure facilities for international visitors, contributing to the development of Marsaskala as a holiday destination. For many years, the hotel was a familiar landmark along the southeastern coastline of Malta. However, changing circumstances eventually led to its closure in 2007. Following the closure, the property remained unused and gradually deteriorated. Exposure to the coastal environment, vandalism and the removal or damage of building materials contributed to the increasingly neglected appearance of the complex. Graffiti spread across the walls, windows and other architectural features, while many interior spaces became exposed to the elements. The abandoned building subsequently attracted considerable public attention because of its prominent location and the contrast between its former status as a luxury resort and its deteriorating condition. The future of the site became the subject of planning discussions and redevelopment proposals. Photographs of the abandoned Jerma Palace Hotel document an important chapter in Malta’s tourism history, illustrating how large hospitality developments can change dramatically after their original commercial use comes to an end. This particular image provides a valuable view of the former resort from the sea, showing the full extent of its waterfront façade and the architectural features that once defined one of Marsaskala’s best-known hotels.
